State Laws and Regulations

Alternative Fuel Tax

The state road tax for vehicles that operate on propane and compressed natural gas (CNG) is paid through an annual flat-fee sticker and the amount is based on the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Each person owning and/or operating a vehicle that operates on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) must obtain an annual decal from the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board notifying that the flat fee has been paid. The decal will not cost more than five dollars. Owners of vehicles that are converted to operate on LPG must apply for a decal within 10 days of installed completion date or risk penalties. Out-of-state alternative fuel vehicle (AFVs) operators that purchase LPG or natural gas within Alabama must pay the current Alabama motor fuel tax. The LPG or natural gas dealer or supplier must remit these funds to the Alabama Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board before the 20th of the month following the date of sale. (Reference Code of Alabama Section 40-17-160 through 40-17-165)
